Welcome to First Step. These terms govern your use of the First Step mobile application and Apple Watch companion app. By using the app, you agree to these terms. We've written them in plain language because we believe clarity builds trust.

1. What First Step Is

First Step is a personal productivity app designed to help you start tasks. It uses AI to break tasks into smaller steps, offers a focus timer, and provides gentle motivation. The app is intended as a personal tool and is not a substitute for professional medical, psychological, or therapeutic advice.

2. Your Account

You may need to create an account to use certain features. You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. If you believe your account has been compromised, please contact us right away.

You must be at least 13 years old to use First Step. If you're under 18, you should have a parent or guardian's permission.

3. How You Can Use the App

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app on your devices. Please use the app responsibly and in line with these terms. You agree not to:

• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the app
• Use the app for any unlawful purpose
• Interfere with or disrupt the app's infrastructure
• Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the app or its systems
• Use automated tools to access or interact with the app

4. Your Content

The tasks, notes, brain dumps, and other content you create in First Step belong to you. We don't claim ownership of your content. However, to operate the app, you grant us a limited license to process, store, and transmit your content through our systems, including sending it to AI services to generate task breakdowns and suggestions.

We treat your content with care and only use it to provide you with the app's features. We don't sell your content or use it to train AI models.

5. AI-Generated Content

First Step uses artificial intelligence to break tasks into steps, extract tasks from brain dumps, and make suggestions. AI-generated content is provided as helpful guidance, not professional advice. Results may vary, and we don't guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or suitability of any AI-generated suggestions.

You're always in control. You can edit, regenerate, or discard any AI-generated content.

6. Subscriptions & Payments

First Step offers a free tier and optional paid subscriptions with a free trial period. Subscriptions are managed through Apple's App Store and are subject to Apple's terms. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time through your device's settings.

Prices may change, but we'll give you notice before any changes affect your current billing period.

7. Intellectual Property

The First Step app, including its design, code, animations, and branding, is owned by us and protected by intellectual property laws. These terms don't give you any rights to our trademarks, logos, or other brand elements.

8. Availability & Changes

We strive to keep First Step running smoothly, but we can't guarantee uninterrupted access. We may update, modify, or discontinue features at any time. We'll try to give you reasonable notice of significant changes.

9. Limitation of Liability

First Step is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law:

• We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the app
• Our total liability for any claim related to the app shall not exceed the amount you've paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $50, whichever is greater
• We are not responsible for any decisions you make based on AI-generated suggestions

Some jurisdictions don't allow certain limitations of liability, so some of the above may not apply to you.

10. Indemnification

You agree to hold us harmless from any claims, losses, or damages arising from your violation of these terms or misuse of the app.

11. Termination

You can stop using First Step at any time by deleting the app and, if you wish, requesting deletion of your account and data.

We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these terms. If we do, we'll try to give you reasonable notice unless immediate action is required.

12. Dispute Resolution

If a dispute arises, we'd prefer to resolve it through friendly communication first. If that doesn't work, any legal proceedings shall be governed by the laws of the jurisdiction where the app operator is based, without regard to conflict of law principles.

13. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we make significant changes, we'll let you know through the app or by other reasonable means. Your continued use of the app after changes are posted means you accept the updated terms.
